I am a feminist.

by Alana Wingfoot

I am a feminist.

This does not mean that I hate men, that I had a weak father or a domineering mother, that I cry "rape" after consensual sex, that I abort every pregnancy, or that I think stay-at-home mothers are wasting their brains.

I am a feminist because I intend to have children. Of course I want the world to be better for my kids, but I also want the world to be better for me when I'm a mother.

I am a feminist because I am an intelligent person. I prefer not to be treated as automatically ignorant because I happen to have breasts and a uterus.

I am a feminist because I am independent. What I do, where I go, what I buy, and who I communicate with are my business, not a supervising man's business.

I am a feminist because I believe women and our ideas, thoughts, opinions, and feelings are just as valuable and important as men and their ideas, thoughts, opinions, and feelings.

I am a feminist.
